Sustainability at Mirror Line

Sustainability

In today’s world, every company has had to take a good look in the mirror when it comes to sustainability — luckily, mirrors are something we know a thing or two about.

In recent years, sustainability has become a central part of everything we do. We pay close attention to our environmental impact, the wellbeing of our employees, and our role in society. While many things are already at a high level, we are also committed to continuous improvement and setting new goals for the future. Below, you can learn how sustainability is reflected in our company today and what goals we have set for the future.

Proudly carrying the Finnish Key Flag Symbol

By choosing Finnish products, you support jobs in Finland. The Finnish Key Flag Symbol makes it easy to recognise products and services that are made or produced in Finland. To receive the symbol, a product or service must be made in Finland, and the company’s level of domestic content must meet strict criteria.
We carry the Key Flag Symbol with pride. At our factory in Karijoki, we employ nearly 40 skilled professionals, and our domestic content is as high as 80%. As a family business, it is also important to us to support other Finnish companies.

Environment

Our factory is located in Karijoki, surrounded by beautiful nature, forests, and open fields. We want future generations to be able to enjoy this environment just as we do today, which is why we are committed to sustainability and doing our part to combat climate change.

  • We use 100% renewable electricity.
  • By optimising our production, we aim to keep energy use efficient and minimise material waste. Thanks to new machinery and software, both small and large components can now be cut from the same board, significantly improving material efficiency. Previously, for example, small drawer parts and large panels were optimised on separate boards, which resulted in more waste.
  • We have improved our recycling processes by investing in balers, which compress cardboard, plastic and protective films into compact units. This makes transportation easier and supports better reuse of materials.
  • We design our products to be long-lasting, both in terms of functionality and quality. We also offer spare parts to help extend the lifespan of our products.
  • The wheel systems used in our sliding doors come with a 30-year warranty, made possible by years of experience and continuous product development.
  • Towards a paperless office! In recent years, we have invested in digital quotation and ordering processes, which have virtually eliminated the need for printed materials in our sales operations. Our accounting has also completely transitioned to digital systems.
  • As our products are made to measure, each one is produced based on actual need. This ensures that we do not accumulate unnecessary stock when our product range evolves.
  • The furniture board material we use meets the highest M1 emission standards for building materials. The boards are manufactured using at least 30% recycled materials, such as defective panels, old window frames, EUR pallets, and wooden ceiling and wall materials. The proportion of recycled content may vary depending on availability.

Carbon footprint

Our carbon footprint in 2024 was 209.08 t CO₂e, which is roughly equivalent to the annual carbon footprint of 22 average Finns. The calculation was carried out in accordance with the GHG Protocol methodology and covers only Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions. Our emissions consist entirely of direct greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 1), such as fuel used by vehicles and on-site heat production.

In 2023, our carbon footprint was 220.70 t CO₂e, meaning our emissions decreased by 5% last year. The main contributing factor was a change in turnover. Our largest source of emissions is vehicle fuel consumption (77.81%), which largely follows the development of business activity. Diesel consumption decreased by 4.9%. We continue to explore the potential of renewable diesel and electric vehicles, but cost considerations and limitations in charging infrastructure currently prevent wider adoption. However, all future purchases of smaller machinery and equipment will be electric.

Having our own transport fleet is an important competitive advantage for Mirror Line, which is why outsourcing transportation is not an option for us. Through efficient route planning and load optimisation, we ensure a high utilisation rate for our vehicles. Operating our own transport fleet also allows goods to be delivered unpackaged rather than on pallets, enabling the available vehicle space to be used as efficiently as possible. Our transport fleet is renewed regularly, typically on an annual basis. As our turnover grows, it is likely that diesel consumption will not increase at the same rate, as deliveries can be consolidated into fuller and more efficiently optimised loads.

Our second largest source of emissions is the particle board used for heat production at our factory (approx. 18.8%). Replacing particle board with wood chips would reduce emissions, but the particle board is a by-product of our production process that would otherwise need to be disposed of through other means. Using our own production by-products for heat generation is currently the most efficient solution, as alternative uses for this material are very limited. Additional emissions would also arise from transporting replacement wood chips to the factory, as well as from processing and transporting discarded particle board material.

#mirrorintiimi

#mirrorintiimi is our greatest strength!

Taking care of our employees is one of the most important aspects of our sustainability efforts. We employ 39 people at our factory in Karijoki.

The people behind Mirror Line are our greatest strength. Our goal is to take such good care of our employees that they enjoy working with us, build long-term careers here, and continue to see Mirror Line as an attractive employer in the future. This commitment is one of the guiding principles of our company strategy. We support the wellbeing and job satisfaction of our employees in many different ways.

Our employee ambassador team, together with regular wellbeing and employee satisfaction surveys conducted by our occupational health provider and pension insurance partner, annual development discussions, and department-specific workshops, helps us stay closely connected to our employees’ wellbeing and workplace experience. The insights we gain allow us to respond proactively to the needs of our staff.

Our occupational health provider and pension insurance partner regularly conduct wellbeing and employee satisfaction surveys among our personnel. According to the latest survey, employee satisfaction at Mirror Line is 4.2 on a scale of 1 to 5.

Making a positive impact around us

  • We pay all our taxes in Finland. In 2024, our tax footprint amounted to €1.5 million. The tax footprint refers to the total amount of taxes paid by a company and highlights the important role businesses play in supporting the welfare state and funding public services
  • We are a significant employer in our region.
  • We have developed a set of sustainability criteria and a self-assessment tool for our suppliers, which we use to evaluate our partners’ sustainability practices. Our aim is to identify areas for improvement together and encourage our suppliers to take further steps in sustainability.
  • Mirror Line’s domestic content is 80%. This refers to the share of Finnish costs in the total cost of a product, including all production-related expenses such as raw materials, labour and packaging. We prioritise Finnish partners and materials whenever possible—for example, all our frames are made in Finland. We continue to work on increasing the level of domestic content, although finding suitable alternatives requires thorough evaluation. In addition to domestic sourcing, factors such as reliability of supply and our quality standards are always carefully considered.
  • We also allocate part of our operating profit to supporting society, for example through charitable donations and sponsorships.

Investing in more efficient production and smarter use of resources

In 2022–2023, we invested in our production facilities with the aim of improving efficiency and increasing resource efficiency. The project was partly funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

The investment included an approximately 800 m² factory extension and the renewal of our panel processing line. These improvements have enabled us to double our panel production capacity compared to previous levels.

One of the key motivations behind the investment was improving employee wellbeing and workplace ergonomics. The new production line has automated several of the most physically demanding tasks, significantly reducing physical strain. The working environment has also improved in terms of indoor air quality, as the sawing stations are now equipped with more efficient dust extraction systems.

Another important goal of the project was to make our production more environmentally friendly. Thanks to modern technology, the new production line consumes significantly less energy than the previous one.

Investing in more efficient and productive storage

Despite challenging market conditions, our business has remained profitable, and we have continued to develop our operations by, among other things, expanding our product range. To respond to the growing demand for hinged doors, we identified a need to improve our storage solutions.

In 2025, we invested in a new automated storage system with the aim of improving storage efficiency and productivity. The project was partly funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

The new automated storage system enables the automation of our front-feed beam saw process. Without the automated system, panels would need to be lifted individually by hand and transported by forklift from storage to the saw. Eliminating this manual handling provides significant ergonomic benefits for our employees.

The automated storage system also helps reduce material waste, which is one of Mirror Line’s sustainability goals.

Sustainability goals for 2025

What are the next steps in Mirror Line’s sustainability journey? Once again, we have set ourselves three key goals — and you can follow our progress along the way.

  1. Implementing a non-conformance reporting tool
At the end of 2024, we introduced the HSE Lite system to support the development of our quality management processes. This digital tool provides a clear and traceable way to report and manage quality deviations. HSE Lite helps us identify recurring issues and respond to them quickly. Our goal is to fully integrate the tool into daily routines and improve communication across the organisation

  2. Introducing a new HR system
We are implementing a new HR system to improve efficiency and data security in managing employee information. The system brings together employee records, employment contracts, payroll data and absences in one place, all protected in accordance with GDPR requirements. It also automatically calculates pay differences by gender and age, supporting compliance with pay transparency regulations and promoting equal pay.

  3. Improving workplace ergonomics
We continuously develop workplace ergonomics across our operations. In 2025, we will focus in particular on reducing the physical strain of heavy production tasks. We have invested in two exoskeletons—external support structures that assist the body during lifting tasks—with the aim of increasing their everyday use. In addition, we are starting trials in which mirrors and glass are cut with protective film already applied. This could significantly reduce the physical strain caused by the current film application process. Despite extensive efforts, we have not yet found a suitable machine that would sufficiently ease this work. We are also planning to invest in a new automated storage system, which would simplify material feeding to the production line and significantly improve workplace ergonomics.
